Street lights along the Badminton Road are to be switched off at night as part of a energy saving scheme.

Badminton Road in Yate to switch off their lights
The area from the new South Gloucestershire Council offices on the A432 to the Wick WIck roundabout on the A4174 Avon Ring Road will be plunged into darkness from the hours of midnight to 5am.
Many others routes in South Gloucestershire will also follow suite and switch their lights off from midnight to 5am throughout Autumn this year.
The plans aim to lower the councils carbon footprint and to conserve energy and money where ever possible.
I'm not someone who travels late at night or in the early hours of the morning so to me this seems like a great way to save money and energy.
Only a select few people travel at these times and it would seem that the majority of people don't travel at these times either so why not switch off the lights?
When you start thinking about it, why are the lights on all through the night? The traffic volumes are enormously lower, there isn't likely to be a great pedestrian presence at these times so why have we had them on all these years for so long?
What do you feel about more streets switching off their street lights at night?
Would you like to see more areas follow suite, and maybe more residential areas switch off?

Thanks for confirming PaulGoss!
I think I can talk for all sections of community when saying that the lampposts MUST stay. Infact, would the residents of Yate like to see more lampposts?

Reportthis is a ridiculous idea, and i would bet the person who thought of it doesnt live on badminton road! i do and its going to cause more accidents and incidents. if they want to reduce their carbon footprint then why dont they turn off their lights and computers in their multi million pound new building??? i live on badmiton road who my house frontage on to it, if this goes ahead and there is and incident which has happened along this road where a vehicle ends up in my garden or worse my house, then it will be the council that i will sue not the driver of the vehicle. im furious and will be at the meeting on the 5th december at the manor hall in coalpit heath at 7pm.
what a dreadful idea to turn off street lights on a busy main A road, words fail me at the stupidity, this road is busy all the time and especially from midnight until 5am its the main road from yate into the ring road and then bristol, so is the ring road and motorways next then??
