There has been yet more vandalism at Yate Railway station. The glass shelters on the platform have been vandalised three times within a one week period.

First Great Western has now informed people that there will be no replacement shelters on the platform as the vandalism cannot be controlled.

To replace the shelters it costs £500 per sheet of glass and the costs are slowly mounting for the train operator.

Although the incidents have been reported to the police, it appears no perpetrators have been found.

If you use the platform for your commute, the absence of the shelters will soon be very noticeable. Will the night’s drawing in and the weather soon to turn, the lack of shelter will make the wait for the train rather more uncomfortable.

My first question is, why can’t First Great Western replace the shelters with something other than glass? Is there not Perspex or another plastic solution?

And, the second, what exactly are we paying our train fares for? Are we not paying for upkeep of the entire railway service?

Do you use Yate Railway Station, do you think the station needs to better monitored to  put a stop to the amount of vandalism? Do you feel safe using the station?
