Bristol-based Alzheimer's charity BRACE has received a £4,000 cheque from Yate firm E R Hemmings Building Ltd – in the form of a cake.

Not content with the traditional giant cheque for the presentation, Hemmings produced a cake with the cheque replicated on top.

David Jones, the managing director of the building firm, said: "We are delighted to have raised £4,000 for such a worthy cause. The staff at E R Hemmings Building Ltd voted to support BRACE as their chosen charity for 2009, and went out of their way to raise as much money as possible.

"BRACE was a charity close to many hearts as some of our staff have been touched by the effects of Alzheimer's disease and we also appreciate that this disease impacts the wider community, so we are keen to show our support on many levels.

Mark Poarch, chief executive of BRACE, said: "This is a wonderful achievement by the staff at Hemmings, and I would like to thank them for what they have done.

"The real cheque has been safely banked, of course, but the cake version was quickly polished off and greatly appreciated by all.

"What came across most when I met the Hemmings staff was how much they had enjoyed raising funds for us.

"I hope other local firms will follow their lead and help BRACE in the urgent fight against Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia."
