The Cross Keys, North Road Yate, is a lovely pub. It's what an old English pub should be; well cared for but not 'tarted up'.

As it boasts on the menu it's not a gastro pub or restaurant, it gives you proper pub grub, and proper portions, at proper prices - proper job!

The food on offer is a good range of the standard pub fair. It's nothing too fancy, but all very tasty, fresh and home-cooked. The prices are several years' out of date with the main courses starting at £3.95 for two sausages with egg and chips.

I had  the Lasagne Verdi which came with a large bowl of chips at £5.25. As it was St. Patrick's Day an Irish Stew was on the specials. One of my party had the stew which came with dumplings and bread and butter. She declared it delicious. The ham was of the proper home-cooked and carved off -the-bone variety.

There was quite a long wait for the food as the pub was crowded. It was St Patrick's Day and the regular Wednesday quiz night. I was warned that there would be a wait when I phoned up to book, and the friendly staff were very apologetic. I was given complimentary coffee and chocolates after my meal.

This is a pub that, 'does what it says on the tin'. So I am very pleased to award it ten Happy Tummies (.) (.) (.) (.) (.) (.) (.) (.) (.) (.)

The Cross Keys serves food Tues to Sat 12- 2pm and 5-8pm.

Phone 01454 228314 to book a table.
